introduction
Apple, in their infinite wisdom, decided to include a really amazing sounding DAC (digital-to-audio) converter in their iPod line since the first generation to the fifth (the verdict is still out on the most recent iteration of the iPod line). The problem seems to lie in the analog signal path as it passes through the iPod’s internal amp.
Follow along in this tutorial to correct this tragedy!

Hey dude, I am looking at your DIYmod for the ipod, and in the intro it states that you will lose the headphone jack… But on red wine audio, it says the 5th and 5.5 gen ipods will have their headphone jacks untouched. Functioning just as before. This confused me???
Sorry if you get tons of these emails, but I would really appreciate it if you could help me out at all.
Thanks,
Sean

This is not the iMod. This is a result of the hard work of DIYer’s from Head-Fi, Headwize and other affiliated networks who have compiled together information that will allow you to obtain a direct signal from the Wolfson DAC. This DIYmod is in no way shape or form affiliated with the iMOD from Redwine Audio or any other products/services offered by any other company.

Thanks for summarizing your approach. Very clear. About removing components, does this render the headphone out useless? Upon removing said components, was there ever any consensus about the sound quality gains versus otherwise? Thanks again-
