open the ipod

Follow this excellent tutorial for opening the 5g iPod. Note that it is not necessary to remove the clickwheel or the screen connectors as long as you are careful when flipping back and forth so you only need to get to page 6 of the guide.

The goal is to be able to see the logic board on the clickwheel side.

desolder the capacitors near the DAC

There are two capacitors (green arrows) north of the DAC (red arrow). The first step if to remove these two capacitors which usually have a ‘Z’ on them so that we can tap the DAC output directly. Click on picture for full size image.

The best way to desolder these capacitors is to use the standard surface mounting technique and move the soldering iron tip back and forth and both sides of one capacitor until you can slide the capacitor off.

After you finish getting both capacitors off, you should get something like this.
