this tutorial
For the sake of simplicity, I will present one way of modding the 5g in this manner: capacitors outside the iPod, connecting through the dock connector.
tools and supplies
- Thin wire: Recommend 30 AWG silver single strand wire or thinner. I got mine here.
- Temperature controlled soldering iron + fine conical tip (Radioshack irons are possible to use but it’s not as easy)
- Plastic tool to open iPod or small flathead screwdriver (depending on how much you care about how it looks at the end)
- Capacitor x 2. Recommendations will be discussed in the tutorial, but as a quick reference consensus as to size to performance ratio seems to be Blackgates NX Hi-Q 6.3V 22uF or 47uF. I got mine at Sonic Craft.
- Custom dock connector. I got the thick, unshielded version from Qables.
- Multimeter to check connections (not required buy highly recommended!)
basic outline of the mod
- Open the iPod
- Desolder the capacitors near the DAC.
- Desolder the inductors by the dock connector.
- Route a wire.
- Close the iPod.
- Create the dock connector with capacitors.
